La Nuit en Rosé is billed as “the world’s first food & wine festival dedicated to rosé wine” whose mission is to showcase the versatility and diversity of rosé. It debuted in New York City in 2014 and this year the tour made stops in Miami and Los Angeles. In New York it’s booze-cruise that heralds the Summer with free-flowing rosé from over 100 worldwide producers with a cheese bar and a pasta & risotto lounge to provide nibbles. A DJ provided music to sip by.
The event took place May 18-20 and I attended the Saturday afternoon session which set sail from the Hornblower Infinity Yacht docked at Pier 40 on the Hudson River in Manhattan. After an hour spent at the dock, we spent a couple of hours cruising lower Manhattan. The weather this year as in last wasn’t optimal but with unlimited wine and great views, everyone had a good time.
On May 13th I attended the 3rd annual Spring edition of Brooklyn Crush, a “wine & arts food festival”. The event was organized by NY Wine Events which runs several wine themed events throughout the year. This one was held at Industry City, an industrial complex of event spaces near the waterfront around 36th street in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn. They featured 175+ wines, cider and some beer and nibbles from local venders.
No trophy wines here but many budget friendly wines. One that stood out was the 2015 Los Pilares LaDona Sparkling Muscat. It’s a Pet-Nat wine from San Diego County, foot-stomped, with a thick layer of wild yeast on the bottom of the bottle, orange, fizzy and surprisingly dry. Some other standouts were beer from Goose Island Beer Co. which poured their specialty beers Gillian, Halia, Juliet and Sofia a couple of which were funky and sour.
Tasty nibbles from Les Trois Petits Cochons, Beecher’s Cheese and very tasty locally made charcuterie from Ends Meat.
On Saturday afternoon, April 29th I attended the 6th annual Wine On Wheels Grand Tasting fundraiser. The event raised money for the Wheeling Forward organization whose mission is to “help people with disabilities experience life to the fullest and enable them to see possibility where others see insurmountable obstacles”.
The fundraise was held at City Winery at 155 Varick Street in Manhattan. The event featured over 200 wines served by over 60 local Sommelier and cocktails created by local Mixologists.
The afternoon was warm and the air-conditioning lacking so I spent a lot of time in the “Champagne Room” where the wine storage tanks are located which was cooler than the rest of the building. There was much juice to drink and people having fun for a good cause. Some of what I sampled:
