Brooklyn Rum Fest 2023

The fourth annual Brooklyn Rum Festival was held on August 12 and was held at the event space “The Monarch” located at 23 Meadow Street in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

The event brought together rums from around the world to sample with the opportunity to ask questions from the brand ambassadors on hand.

Rum is a liquor made from distilled sugar cane molasses or sugar cane juice and comes in light, dark, aged and flavored versions. It made around the world but mostly concentrated in the Caribbean where the sugar cane was grown and processed.

It seemed like there were fewer vendors on hand this year than last, but they still had a nice selection of rums from big producers as well as from small, artisanal brands.

Bacardi had an interesting trio of 8yr rums aged in various types of barrels, Rolling Fork Single Cask had a rum from Barbados aged in four different barrels which made for an interesting side by side tasting. Appleton had a trio of 8, 12 and 15yr old rums, Barbancourt was well represented with its 8 and 15yr rums as well as another rum from Hati with a very artistic label. Plantation Rum poured their line of rums from various countries.

Other producers that I sampled from during the event included Rhum JM, Charman’s Reserve, Worthy Park, Myrtle Bank, Pere Labat, Dumas, Rum-Bar and Striped Lion.

Beer, Bourbon & BBQ Fest NYC 2023

The Beer, Bourbon & BBQ Festival is a multi-city food tour of travelling pit masters showing off their signature BBQ offerings. On July 8th, the 13th annual festival arrived in New York City.

The festivals motto is Brew it. Taste it. Sip it. Pork it.

Along with the pitmasters Beer, Bourbon and canned cocktail purveyors were on hand to help wash down all that BBQ.

The event was held at the multi building industrial space at Industry City located on the Brooklyn waterfront at 268 36th Street. Now that the Brooklyn Expo event space has been taken off the market, it seems that this has become the go to event space for these type of events.

It was a hot and sweltering Satuday afternoon, perfect for strolling around the outdoor courtyard surrounded by fire pits of roasting meats.

Unlike the Rib King BBQ event which focused on, well, ribs, this event featured a lot of sliced meat. I spent a lot of time at the cheeseburger stand hosted by Gotham Burger which were delicious with a foray into chicken tacos and sliced lamb with chimichurri.

I did attend a Garisson Brothers Bourbon Old Fashion seminar.

Indie Spirits Expo New York 2023

The Independent Spirits Expo was held in New York City on June 12th and was held at the Penn Club, an old school Ivy League club located at 30 West 44th Street in midtown Manhattan.

It was a gathering of “small, independent, family-owned hand-crafted spirits and the distillers, importers, bottlers, distributors and representatives” for a walk around tasting of the products that they were selling.

For the most part they were small, off the radar producers, with a couple of familiar names thrown in but for the most part small, not widely distributed producers. There was a good selection of white and brown spirits, cordials and a nice selection of artisanal Amaros.

A couple of interesting outliers that were poured included Trä-KáL, a clear spirit from Patagonia and Myris, a nutmeg liquor (better than it sounds) from Zanzibar.

I decided to focus my time on brown spirits and sampled some very nice French brandies, American whiskies and dark rums.

Amaros, Bitters and Vermouths from Fred Jerbis, Chiot, Cocchi and Cappelletti.

Cognac, Armagnac and Calvados from Cloque Pepin, Dartigalongue and Chateau di Kontambere.

Whiskey from Koval, Garrison Brothers, Few and Dad’s Hat.

Dark Rum from Chairman’s Reserve and Holme’s Cay.

Decanter Wine Encounter NYC 2023

Decanter is a British based wine magazine that is similar to the Wine Spectator magazine in that they feature articles on all things related to wine including wine reviews.

Each year they host a wine tasting in London and last year for the first time, they held that tasting in New York City.

On June 10th they held the second annual fine wine encounter tasting in New York City. As in last year, the event was held at Manhatta restaurant located at 28 Liberty Street in lower Manhattan.

The restaurant is on the 60th floor and fortunately, the Canadian wildfire smoke from the previous week was gone and the picture windows in the restaurant provided an impressive view of lower Manhattan harbor.

They brought “world class wines from around the world” with over 50 of the producers on hand to explain what they were pouring. They also held several master classes and a separate tasting of 34 of their Gold, Platinum and Best in Show winning wines from the Decanter World Wine Awards.

It was a selection of wines of the world with France and Italy well represented and Californina and Oregon not so much so.

Scarsdale Music Fest 2023

The 3rd annual Scarsdale Music Festival was held this year on June 6th. Not surprisingly it was held in the village of Scarsdale which is a 45-minute train ride on Metro North. It was held in the village center which is conveniently in front of the train station.

The event which was presented by Morgan Stanley, was to “bring together people of all ages to celebrate their love of music, food and community”.

There were 10 bands playing on two stages with food trucks and a couple of bars providing food and drink to the festival goers.

The “Grand Tasting Tent” was sponsored by Zachys wine shop and had a selection of wines from the major wine producing countries of the world.

They seemed to have fewer wines available for tasting this year than in last year, probably because they had their big wine tasting at their shop a couple of weeks ago. For the tasting they offered small, plastic cups to sip from which did nothing to enhance the tasting experience.

Rib King NYC 2023

The Rib King BBQ festival was held on Memorial Day weekend on Saturday, May 27.

It was another food event curated by Food Karma and Jimmy Carbone that have also hosted other foodie events such as Pig Island, Brisket King and Bowl of ‘Zole.

The event was held at Industry City at 220 36th Street in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn. Industry City is a complex of warehouses on the Brooklyn waterfront that have been repurpose into retail and commercial spaces.

With many eateries, a brewery, a sake brewery and a distillery, there were many opportunities to have something to eat and drink and on this sunny holiday weekend. The complex was packed with all sorts of people including families milling around and enjoying the day.

There was no way better to spend the unofficial start of Summer than by strolling amongst the pitmasters with the smoke of cooking ribs in the air.

Zachys Welcome Port Chester Tasting

Zachys is one of the oldest fine wine and spirits retailer in the country and a spirits auction house. It’s a family-owned operation that was founded in 1944.

Their shop was located in Scarsdale village for many years but then they moved their operations to Port Chester, a town in northeast Westchester about an hour’s ride by Metro North rail.

Not surprisingly for a wine and spirits shop, they often host tastings in the store. On May 20 & 21 they hosted a “Welcome Port Chester” mega tasting at the store to benefit Meals on Main Street. For those two days they had advertised that would have 40 producers pouring over 70 wines.

I attended the event on Sunday afternoon. If you were a fan of Champagne, the selections that were poured were worth the price of the ticket just for that. Piper Heidsieck Rare, Taittinger Comtes de Champagne, and Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame were just a few of the top notch Champagne that were offered for tasting.

The rest of the wines were a good mix of Italian, U.S. and French and made for a nice afternoon of wine tasting. I did try something for the first time that I never had before, a pretzel croissant. Very delicious.

Bourbon On Derby Day

The first Saturday in May is a good party day. There are many Cinco de Mayo parities celebrated that day, and it is also Derby Day which is another reason to throw a party.

The Kentucky Derby is run on that day at Churchill Downs in Kentucky. Called “the greatest two minutes in sports”, it is a tradition that began in 1875.

What better way to celebrate an iconic sporting event than with America’s iconic spirit, Bourbon.

That afternoon the Bourbon at Belmont event was held at Belmont Park racetrack located at 2150 Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont.

It’s a reoccurring event that features over 30 Bourbon with live horse racing and a simulcast of the Kentucky Derby.

It makes for an usual venue and for an old school experience. The event took place on the 4th floor clubhouse which gave us access to the outdoor grandstand overlooking the racetrack. If you wanted to, you could have placed a bet on a race, purchased a cigar from one of the vendors at the event and sat in the grandstand with a bourbon in one hand, a cigar in the other and cheered your horse on to victory.

All of the Bourbon producers have several renditions of the spirit on hand to pour as well as a bottled rye. These were a few of the producers I sampled:

ABC Wines of Long Island

ABC is an anagram for “anything but Chardonnay” (or Cabernet Sauvignon). Chardonnay is one of the premier grape varietals in the world and on the east end of Long Island wine AVA, the most widely planted white grape with Sauvignon Blanc a distant second.

Many people get stuck in a rut and drink only one type of wine and that’s too bad since there are many varietals grown around the world and bottled other than Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Out on the North Fork everyone bottles some type of Chardonnay, but many wineries have a few acres of the other whites planted as well.

One Sunday afternoon I drove out East to sample a few.

One Women Winery 5195 Old North Road, Southold

Family run winery with the smallest tasting ‘shack” on the wine crawl.

2020 Gruner Veltliner

Medium gold in color, earthy and floral notes on the nose, ripe vegetal, asparagus on the fruit ending with crisp acidity.

Bedell Cellars 36225 Main Road, Cutchogue

One of the first wineries to open on the North Fork with grapevines planted in 1980. They bottle several outlier grape varietals.

2021 Viognier

Medium yellow with a greenish tint, big nose of green apples with green apple notes on the fruit ending with a nice crisp finish.

Palmer Vineyards 108 Sound Avenue, Riverhead

Another one of the original wineries out East, it was recently sold to the folks who own Paumanok Vineyards.

2022 Albariño

Medium gold, asparagus and white flowers on the nose, juicy apples on the fruit with moderate to low acidity ending with tart lime notes.
